State Championship Game Preview

It’s only fitting, that the roadblock to the Wildcats first state championship goes through the Golden Eagles.  For my first five years in the Wildcat program, the Golden Eagles owned the Wildcats – blowing us out at every opportunity – literally.  We lost thirteen games in a row to them, won one then lost three.  In those years our goal was not to win the state title, that was a lofty goal, our first priority was to beat the Golden Eagles.  In the past three years, we have erased the issue of beating them by winning six in a row and reached for the state championship.  Tonight it is within our grasp and playing the Golden Eagles will require no extra motivation on either side.  Let’s look at tonight’s matchup.

We have played them on three occasions, with the Wildcats winning all three.

November 8th  83-60, January 9th 83-65, January 17th 61-28

The Golden Eagles starters are:

 #5  Luke Wesseling 5’10” PG

#15 Kent Judy 5’9” Jr SG

#20 Josiah Murray 6’5” Sr C

#22 Kanoah Whitten 6’0” Sr F

#40 Brian Heman 5’10” Sr F

As in the previous games this weekend, the question will be the Golden Eagles deal with the pressure applied by the Cats.  So far this year the answer is no and with Brian Heman having two broken fingers, the probability is slim.  You always have to play the game to find out what will really happen.  They won an emotional game coming from behind last night followed by the victory over the Eagles this morning.  Their bench is not as deep as the Cats and we should wear them down as the game goes along on the longer court.  Huntington’s slow controlled tempo actually worked to their favor an we do not want them to dictate the flow of the game tonight.  Regardless of any of our opponent’s game plans if we execute and play our game we should control the tempo and bring home our first state title.

Game time is approximately 7:45.  Check back then and we will be ready to chase the first state championship for the Wildcats.   GO WILDCATS!
